TOWER OF PISA

The tower is the most distinctive monument in Piazza dei Miracoli is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was begun by Bonnano in 1173 adopting the motif of the superimposed galleries used on Rinaldo's Cathedral facade. The project was abandoned when it was on its third story because of the subsidence of the soil which caused the structure to lean. After a century, the consturction was resumed by Goivanni de Simone rectifying the error in its inclination. A spiral staircase of 294 steps leads up to top the bell tower built by Tomaso, the son of Andrea Pisano. The seven bells inside the chamber are tuned according to the seven notes og the musical scale.
